Description

Obverse. On a silver disc 1½ inches (3.81cm) in diameter consisting of a stylized laurel wreath overlaid at its base by a partially unfurled scroll inscribed “NASA.” Superimposed over the scroll is the figure of Atlas supporting the V-shaped vector symbol of NASA among a spray of stars in the upper left quadrant.

Reverse. The reverse of the medal consists within a wreath of laurel a background of the universe with the reverse V-shaped vector symbol of NASA in heavier texture, in base a scroll inscribed “Silver Achievement.”

Symbolism. The mythological figure of Atlas, a primordial Titan who supported the heavens, is depicted lifting an image of the V-shaped vector of NASA overhead, alluding to the exceptional efforts made in support of NASA’s core values.

Ribbon. The ribbon is 1-3/8 inches (3.49cm) in width, composed of the following vertical stripes: 1/8 inch (.32cm) Cobalt Blue 67; 1/8 inch (.32cm) Bluebird 67117; 1/16 inch (.04cm) White 67101; 3/16 inch (.48cm) Bluebird 67117; 1/8 inch (.32cm) White 67101; 1/8 inch (.132cm) Bluebird 67117; 1/8 inch (.32cm) White 67101; 3/16 inch (.48cm) Bluebird 67117; 1/16 inch (.04cm) White 67101; 1/8 inch (.32cm) Bluebird 67117; 1/8 inch (.32cm) Cobalt Blue 67171.
